I occasionaly connect to WIFI networks that redirect me and ask for some type of username and password. Often when out and about, on trains and at airports are good examples. Luckily in my laptop I have a 3g sim and so don't have a need for their wallet busting prices.

I suppose if you were fairly keen on getting a username and password for one of these services, you could always

  • Connect to the network in question
  • Save the page the you get redirected to
  • Set up your laptop as a wireless hotspot and call the network BT_OPENZONE
  • Modify the page slightly, posting and saving to a text file of your choice and force visitors to redirect to your new Page. Anyone foolish enough to login (not noticing that it's not on https etc..) will give you their password and username.
  • Logon using your stolen details. Of course you need to remember that the action would be illegal..

It got me thinking that you could be even more malicious. Sitting down in a Starbucks, mimicking their WIFI and modifying your hosts file to redirect to fake local pages of major banks, email sites and the like is essentially a giant honeypot for collecting personal data. Someone could even prepare a complete web server install so that numpties wouldn't have to code the various fake sites etc...

Having thought of this makes me glad I stick to my 3g! I wonder how many people don't even think about accessing private sites without https on public networks. I wonder how many people walk out of The House Of Commons into a local pub and access sites on their Smartphones over the local WIFI without even thinking about things like this. If I was a nasty little spy I would be doing things like this. In fact I am certain they are doing things like this to our technologically demented MPs right now.

A nice take on mobile phone packaging. I noticed in the comments many people moaning about the actual practicalities of such packaging. I don't think I'll get caught up in such banter as the video is predominantly a channel to provoke thought about how to make our packaging more intuitive.

Why I don't have this costume is a complete mystery to me. I am reaching out to all those who claim to love me. Buy me this costume. I see it as not a fancy dress outfit, more a costume for every day living. I am absolutely certain North 51 would welcome the new Lord Asimo Finn into their office with open arms.

The terrible news that Megaupload has hit me hard. I love the lack of understanding of how technology works. It borders on having mental health issues. Do prosecutors / Hollywood fools really think this would stop piracy in any way? A site is easily come by. When one site is closed, another can be created in its place. You can sue the world but it still won't matter. You can't stop the changing nature in how man lives. 100 years ago there was no such thing as comically rich music executives. Who is to say in 100 years no one will even know what that title means again?

I watched Star Trek earlier. Seeing them using the replication machines reminded me of the Maker stories yesterday. There were questions of piracy of designs for 3d items. I wonder if someone invented a replicator now, would we have questions of piracy? I think there would still be foul creatures trying to make money out of it even it could cure world hunger.

Tue, 10 Jan 2012 04:05:00 -0800 NESTA - Next Gen. http://www.dominicfinn.co.uk/nesta-next-gen http://www.dominicfinn.co.uk/nesta-next-gen

Following on from an article on the BBC about Raspberry Pi, this next gen report has some interesting findings.

The scariest stat which I picked out from the BBC website was "out of the 28,767 teachers who were awarded Qualified Teacher Status... in 2010, only three qualified in computing or computing science as their primary qualification"

Having worked as a computer science teacher for a year in a school that was a specialist in Computing I can concur that the uptake in Comp Sci was woeful. 2 Students for A2... The other teachers backgrounds in Computer Science was also fairly woeful (most knowing a bit about Office but still a paltry amount even about that). I couldn't speak for my counterpart that I was covering however. I suspect they were fairly up on things.

All in all what kills me is that Computer science is not a secondary level subject. Areas are often covered, a little in IT, a little in DT subjects (if kids choose Systems and Control or Electronics) and obviously a little in phyiscs and maths. However these are not taught with any intent of bringing them together.

I think the least schools can do without having to wait for the curriculum to change is to build up a "maker culture" in schools. Evening and lunchtime meetings where kids can fiddle with programming / electronics and mix it with other areas they are interested in such as art and music and learn some basic concepts that will whet their appetite for the subject. Little gadgets like the Arduino and the Raspberry Pi will hopefully help in this area!

Fri, 06 Jan 2012 01:17:00 -0800 CSS Selecting elements that are immediate children only http://www.dominicfinn.co.uk/css-selecting-elements-that-are-immediate-chi http://www.dominicfinn.co.uk/css-selecting-elements-that-are-immediate-chi

I have been working on my integration skills recently with @Trullock  and have been really enjoying it. Coming from a foul tables background and not really looking at much CSS for a couple of years has left me in a bit of a rut. Especially when it comes to integrating from a proper design from scratch and not just pinching bits from all over the place. I will try and publish some more little gems I have been shown when I get round to it.

I was quite pleased with this CSS Selector. We used this both in the CSS and for getting a hold of things in JQuery.

When you want to select only immediate children of a class, id or element you can use the following:

.parent.child /* For immediate children that are classes... */

/parent > ul /* For immediate children that are elements... */

This will then stop the browser / jquery looking further down the tree and wasting time, memory and potentially finding something you don't want the style to apply to or JQuery to get hold of.

This might be obvious to some but it was a nice little tip for me!

Mod of the Year 2011

Published on 23rd December 2011 by Antony Leather

Mod of the Year 2011

2011 has undoubtedly been one of the best ever years for PC modding. In fact, so many projects have graced our world-famous modding forum that we've had real trouble sifting through all the incredible talent that's been on show this year. As it stands, this is our biggest-ever Mod of the Year competition, with 25 projects taking part.

However, the back-to-back winner, Attila Lukacs, who claimed 1st place in 2009 and 2010 is absent, as he's still working on his follow up project. As such, this year's much sought-after Mod of the Year crown is definitely up for grabs, along with some epic prize bundles.

That's not to say Attila wouldn't have had some extremely stiff competition. This year we've had some of the most amazing projects we've ever seen, from water-cooled desk PCs, TRON Lightcycles, wooden wonders, mini-ITX masterpieces, scale starships and of course more racy-looking water-cooled PCs than you can shake a stick at.

There's something for everybody, whether you're into mods or scratchbuilds, air-cooling or water-cooling. As usual, though, we need you to vote for your favourite projects - you've got multiple votes to use and if you vote you'll also be in with a chance of winning some awesome Carbon Fibre modding mesh from Mnpctech - we've got 25 prizes to give away, so check out all the amazing projects and vote for your favourites.

The projects are listed below in alphabetical order with a description and gallery on the following pages. Once you've finished trying to cope with all the eyecandy, head over to the voting page. You have ten votes - use them wisely!

Sciencelectures

After a really successful series of physics and astronomy lectures (which went on for over a year!), there will be a more general science series of lectures starting in the new year with the space shuttle story on the 12th of Jan.

It's well worth coming down to the lectures even if you are not from a strong scientific background. I wouldn't consider myself among the most lowly of scientific minds and I always find them enlightening.

If you know of anyone who might be interested in these lectures please pass the message on. It's in my interest to advertise it because I enjoy going to them, the more popular they are the longer they will go on for!
